My book got approved but isn’t showing in search. Normal?

My book went live on KDP two days ago, the product page works and I can buy it, but it doesn't come up at all when I search the title or my author name on Amazon. I've triple-checked the spelling. Is this a normal indexing delay or did I break something?

Totally normal. Amazon's search index lags behind the live product page, usually 24-72 hours but I've seen it take up to 5 days during busy periods. The book being buyable but not searchable is the classic 'live but not yet indexed' state. Give it 72 hours before you assume anything is broken.

Quick test while you wait: search the ASIN itself (it's in your product URL after /dp/). If the ASIN pulls up the book but the title doesn't, that confirms it's purely an indexing delay and not a metadata problem. If even searching your seven backend keywords turns up nothing after four or five days, then it's worth contacting KDP.

Make sure those seven keyword slots in your KDP setup are actually filled and that you're not wasting them. Don't repeat words from your title (already indexed), don't stuff your name, use reader search phrases instead: 'slow burn enemies to lovers', 'cozy mystery small town'. Those phrases are a big part of what the index matches you against once it catches up.

Searching the ASIN worked, it pulls right up. So it really is just indexing and I should stop refreshing the search bar every ten minutes?

When you do search your own title, add your author name to the query. Common debut titles compete with hundreds of existing books, so 'The Lighthouse' might bury you on page 8 even when you ARE indexed. 'The Lighthouse Jane Author' will surface you immediately. People mistake 'ranked low' for 'not indexed' all the time.

If it's still invisible past the 5-day mark, open a case with KDP through the Help > Contact Us flow and specifically say 'title and author search not returning an indexed, live title' and include the ASIN. Generic 'my book won't show up' tickets get a copy-paste reply. Naming the indexing issue with the ASIN gets a human to push it.

One more cause people miss: if you used a pen name, Amazon search matches the name exactly as entered in Author Central and the book's contributor field. A mismatch (middle initial on one, not the other) can make author-name search look empty even when the title is fully indexed. Claim the book in Author Central and make the names identical.

While it indexes, go verify your categories actually applied. KDP lets you pick a few, but the granular subcategories (the ones that get you a top-100 badge) often need a manual request to KDP support now. A correctly placed book in a less-crowded category gets discovered through browse even before keyword search fully kicks in.

Add your A+ Content too if you haven't. It doesn't directly fix indexing, but a page with A+ modules and complete metadata seems to get crawled and settled faster in my experience, and it's ready to convert the moment search does surface you. Empty product pages just feel like they sit in limbo longer.

Yes, step away from the search bar. The ASIN test passing is the all-clear. Spend the next two days lining up reviews and double-checking your categories instead, that's a far better use of the wait than reloading.
