Spine text keeps getting rejected for being too close to the edge

Every time I upload my paperback, the spine text gets flagged for being too close to the edge, and I keep nudging it and re-uploading and getting rejected again. I clearly don't understand how the spine width is actually calculated or how much margin I need. Can someone explain the spine math so I stop guessing?

The core thing: your spine width is not a fixed number, it's calculated from your page count times your paper thickness. More pages or thicker paper equals a wider spine. So you can't design the spine until your interior is final and you know the exact page count, because adding ten pages shifts the whole spine width and re-centers everything.

That's exactly my mistake, I designed the spine before the interior was locked and the page count changed under me. So I need final pages first, then calculate. Is there a formula or do I just trust the template?

Use the template, don't hand-roll the math. KDP and IngramSpark both have a cover template generator: you punch in trim size, page count, and paper type, and they hand you a PDF with the exact spine width and the safe zones already drawn. Build your cover on top of that template layer and the spine width is guaranteed correct for that specific page count.

Practical check before you upload: most platforms show a preview with the safe-zone and fold guides overlaid. Actually look at it instead of trusting your file. If the spine text is even touching the fold guide line in that preview, it'll get rejected. Nudge it until there's visible breathing room on both sides, then submit.

Paper choice quietly changes everything here. White and cream stock have different thicknesses, and switching from white to cream after you've designed can widen the spine by a noticeable amount and re-break your alignment. Lock your paper type before you generate the template, and if you change it, regenerate the template and rebuild the spine.

The reason you keep getting rejected specifically: the spine has its own safe margin, usually about 0.0625 inch (1.6mm) of clearance on each side, and the trim itself can drift by a similar amount during binding. So your text needs to sit well inside the spine, not centered to the literal edge. Keep spine type away from the fold lines by at least 1.5 to 2mm and the rejections stop.

This solved it. I locked the interior, regenerated the IngramSpark template for my final page count and cream paper, and rebuilt the spine inside the safe zone with about 2mm clearance each side. Passed on the next upload. The 'design the spine last' rule is the whole lesson.

Big one nobody warns you about: most printers won't let you put text on the spine at all below roughly 100 to 130 pages, because the spine is physically too narrow to print on reliably and the wrap can shift onto the front or back. KDP's threshold is 100 pages. If your book is thin, plan for a blank spine and don't fight it.

To build on the thin-spine point, that's a real argument for padding a short book up over the threshold if a spine title matters to you, via slightly larger trim, larger type, or more front/back matter. On a bookstore or even a home shelf, a blank spine is invisible. Sometimes getting above 130-ish pages is worth restructuring the interior for.

General safe-margin rule that trips people up everywhere on the cover, not just the spine: keep all text at least about 0.125 inch (3mm) from any trim edge, because the cutting blade has tolerance and can shave into that zone. The spine is the tightest version of this because it's bounded on both sides by folds, so it's where sloppy margins get caught first.

One more guard: build the cover at 300 DPI and check the spine text size at actual print scale, not zoomed in. On a narrow spine, type often needs to be fairly small to fit with margins, and text that looks fine at 200 percent zoom can be a hairline mess at real size. View it at 100 percent to sanity-check before exporting the PDF.
